Topical treatments for basal cell carcinoma (BCC)

For small, superficial basal cell carcinomas, topical therapies may offer a less invasive option than surgery. This resource reviews creams and gels such as imiquimod, which stimulates the immune system to attack cancer cells, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which disrupts cancer cell DNA. Diclofenac reduces inflammation while eliminating cancer cells, and ingenol mebutate, a plant-derived gel, can directly destroy tumors. Photodynamic therapy, which combines a light-sensitive liquid with special light exposure, is another option, especially for facial lesions. These treatments are useful in selected cases, but some BCCs may still require surgery or radiation for complete removal.
