Understanding Atypical Fibroxanthoma: A Guide for Patients

Atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX) is a very rare form of skin cancer of the spindle cells that often gets mistaken for squamous cell carcinoma or other forms of skin cancer. AFX occurs within the top layers of your skin but can involve deeper structures. This condition usually appears on parts of the body that get a lot of sun, like the head and neck. In fact, about 85% of AFX cases are found in this area.
