Understanding Polyomavirus and Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC): What It Means for Patients

MCC is a rare, fast-growing skin cancer that often appears as a firm, painless red or purple lump on sun-exposed skin. About 80% of cases are linked to Merkel cell polyomavirus, which can integrate into skin cells and drive tumor growth. Virus-positive MCC often has a better outlook and may respond well to immunotherapy, while all MCCs are staged and treated with some mix of surgery, radiation, and systemic therapy. Ask your doctor about testing for the virus, follow close surveillance after treatment, and lower risk with sun protection and steps that support immune health.
