Sun Safety Tips and Checklist

Authored by

Isaac Sluder

Protecting yourself and your family from the sun involves multiple strategies to reduce UV damage and skin cancer risk. Use broad-spectrum, SPF 30+ sunscreen (reapplied every 2 hours, even on cloudy days), and consider mineral-based options for sensitive skin. Add physical protection with wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking clothing (UPF 50+), and sunglasses. Don’t forget SPF lip balm. Carry portable shade options like umbrellas or pop-up tents and stay well hydrated—adults and kids should drink water every 15–20 minutes when outdoors. A checklist helps ensure essentials (sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, water) are packed for outings. For children, a “sun safety game” with points and rewards can make reapplying sunscreen and drinking water fun and engaging.
