A Concise Guide to Sun Safety Practices: A Guide for Patients

UV from the sun and tanning beds is the main driver of skin damage and common skin cancers. Protect yourself with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen (about one ounce for exposed skin) and reapply every two hours, plus after swimming or sweating. Pair sunscreen with UPF clothing, long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and seek shade from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Avoid tanning beds. Routine check-ins with your doctor and yearly dermatology exams build good habits; consistent sunscreen use has been shown to lower melanoma risk by about 50–73%.
