Staging of Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC)

Over the past several years, multiple staging systems and guidelines have been established for nonmelanoma skin cancers, including the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) eighth edition and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) tumor staging system. There is no universally accepted definition of what makes a tumor high-risk, but there are several widely used options. The staging systems are based on an TNM system, taking into account the tumor size and whether it has grown into nearby structures (T), whether the tumor has spread to nearby lymph nodes (N), and whether the tumor has spread to distant parts of the body (M).
