Topical treatments for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)

Several topical therapies can be used for superficial squamous cell carcinoma, particularly when surgery or other procedures are not feasible. This resource reviews options such as imiquimod, which boosts the immune system to attack cancer cells, and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which interferes with cancer cell DNA to cause cell death. Diclofenac, an anti-inflammatory gel, and ingenol mebutate, a plant-derived gel that directly kills cancer cells, are also discussed. Photodynamic therapy combines a light-sensitive liquid with special light exposure to destroy cancer cells, making it especially useful for lesions on the face and scalp. By understanding these topical approaches, patients and caregivers can explore alternatives that may suit individual health needs and preferences.
